In the wake of the devastating mass school shooting in Parkland, Florida, several states have joined together to form a coalition that aims to combat gun violence. The multi-state coalition, comprised of governors from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Delaware, and Puerto Rico. The states will pool their resources in an effort to conduct research, gather intelligence, share information, and enhance response efforts for situations of gun violence. Another motive of the coalition is to stop the sale of illegal guns on the black market.

New York State already has the strictest gun control laws in the entire United States, and other states may be soon to follow in its footsteps. The states involved in the coalition will share information amongst each other regarding individuals who are not permitted to purchase or possess firearms in each state.

Currently, in New York State, individuals who meet the high standards that the state has set are permitted to obtain a firearm permit. The New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act of 2013, also known as the NY SAFE Act, is the governing body of firearms in the state.

Individuals who have committed gun crimes in New York State will be subject to very harsh penalties. If you have questions about firearms in New York State, contact our firm today.
