All drivers in the state of New York are required to abide by the rules of the road. However, the one that is most frequently disregarded is the speed limit. There are many drivers who speed anyway, seeing it as not that big of an issue. However, speeding can be very dangerous and cause serious accidents on the road. The law enforcement in New York works hard to ensure drivers are following the speed limit. This is done by imposing certain fines and penalties on speeding violations. Continue reading below to learn more.
What is a Speeding Violation?
Drivers who are pulled over for speeding can face certain consequences as a result of their actions. This can include fines and points on their license. In New York, depending on the speed the driver was going, they can receive anywhere from 3-11 points on their license. The New York point system is as follows:
- 3 points for driving 1-10 miles over the speed limit
- 4 points for driving 11-20 miles over the speed limit
- 6 points for driving 21-30 miles over the speed limit
- 8 points for driving 21-40 miles over the speed limit
- 11 points for driving 41 miles or more over the speed limit
If a driver receives 11 points on their license within an 18 months period, they may be subject to a license suspension. It is important to note that collecting points can cause an increase in personal finances and car insurance payments as well.
What is a Plea Bargain?
When a person receives a speeding ticket, they may want to retain legal assistance from an attorney who can help them navigate these situations. This is because an experienced attorney may be able to help to get the charges against them reduced. There are many cases in which prosecutors are open to working with attorneys in order to avoid further problems and costs at the expense of the state when they are not necessary. This can possibly result in reducing the weight of the offense against the driver.
