Governor Cuomo Enforced Speeding Crackdown: What to Know if You Got a Ticket

Last week, it was announced by Governor Cuomo that there would be a week-long crackdown on speeding throughout the state of New York. From August 6 to August 12, police were making more patrols that were focused on ticketing drivers who travel over the designated speed limit. The announcement came after the Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research at the University at Albany’s Rockefeller College released data that showed unsafe speed as a contributing factor in 34% of fatal crashes in the beginning of this year.

Speaking about the decision to implement the crackdown on speeding, Governor Cuomo stated, “Speed limits are not a suggestion, they are the law and they save lives. There is no excuse for driving at high speeds – it’s unnecessary and endangers everyone on the road–and I urge New Yorkers to be smart and slow down because it’s not worth risking lives to save a few seconds on your next commute or trip to the store.”

State Police Superintendent Keith M. Corlett added his own statement by saying, “During this campaign and through enforcement efforts all year, our goal is to reduce speed-related crashes and improve safe travel for everyone on New York’s roadways. We urge all drivers – do your part to improve safety and obey posted speed limits, drive defensively, and put away your smartphone when you’re behind the wheel.”

What do I do if I Was Issued a Ticket?

Drivers who recently received a ticket for speeding should be aware of the consequences they can face. In New York, a speeding ticket can result in points added to their license, which can also lead to higher insurance premiums. In addition to this, the driver may have to pay significant fines. If they already have points on their license, there is a chance the driver may have their license suspended. This can be very damaging to a person and their driving record, which is why it is important to retain the services of an attorney who can help. A proper attorney can fight to try and mitigate the charges or drop them entirely.
