New York State wants to enforce safety in regards to who can and cannot legally purchase and carry a gun within the state. The New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act of 2013, or the SAFE Act serves to protect New Yorkers from anyone who may be considered a threat if they were to own a gun.

This relatively new law requires any license dealer who sells guns within the state to preform background checks on anyone who purchases ammunition for pistols, as well as for any other gun purchase. In addition, every sale must be reported to the state. If a firearm becomes stolen, it must be reported within 24 hours in order to make sure safety protocols are taken.

The State aims to make sure that illegal guns are off the streets and that no one who is considered dangerous can purchase one. This piece of legislation wants to prevent anyone who is dangerously mentally ill or previously convicted of a crime from accessing firearms or assault weapons. In order to legally sell ammunition or firearms, you must be individually registered with the New York State Police, regardless of whether or not you are in a business or partnership. Your registration will not expire unless it is revoked by the state.
