The United States Department of Homeland Security is implementing REAL ID enforcement nationwide in about one year from now. This is not a huge, sweeping change, however, it is important you ensure your ID is compliant with DHS standards by then. To learn more about REAL IDs and how they may affect you, please read on.

What is the purpose of the REAL ID?

The essential purpose of the REAL ID is to ensure that our nation’s identity documents are more consistent, secure, and are all held to the same standards. However, if you do not have a REAL ID driver license, identification card, or other federally approved identification, you may not be able to board planes, enter nuclear power plants, or to access certain federal facilities, so it is important you do not wait until the day before a booked flight to get yours.

When do I have to get a REAL ID?

While some states already have REAL ID’s implemented, you are required to have one by October 20, 2020, and you may not board a domestic flight without one after that point. Though a year down the road may seem like a long time from now, the truth of the matter is, the sooner you get yours, the better. To get a REAL ID, you will have to go to the DMV with proof of your identity and speak with a representative there.

How much does a REAL ID cost?

Real ID driver licenses will cost $35, and ID cards will cost $30. You can differentiate REAL ID cards from current cards by checking for a star in the upper portion of your ID card. If you see a star, then you most likely already have a REAL ID. If you have any further questions, you may check with your DMV online or speak with an attorney who would be happy to point you in the right direction.
