    What are the Types of Gun Permits in New York?

    In New York State, there are three primary types of gun permits that can be obtained: 

    • A permit to possess and carry during employment
    • A permit to carry a concealed gun
    • A permit to possess a gun on-premises

    It is important to note that, once you apply for a gun permit, you can wait four months to hear back.  

    What Guns Do I Need a Permit to Own?

    In New York, there are certain guns that require a permit while others you do not need them for. Common types of gun for some people to want ownership of are rifles and shotguns. In order to purchase these guns in New York, you do not need to have a permit unless you live in New York City. 

    On the other hand, a permit is required to purchase a handgun in New York. To obtain this permit, you must be over the age of 21 and a resident of the state. In addition to this, applicants must have “good moral character” and cannot have a past criminal record. They must also prove they have a “legally-recognized reason” for wanting to purchase a handgun.

    How do I Get a Firearm Permit in New York?

    Residents of New York City or Long Island, New York are required to apply to the police commissioner or the sheriff in order to get their permit. Residents of upstate New York can apply with the County Court. Within the application, be sure to include:

    • Your name, date of birth, and address
    • Whether or not you have a criminal record
    • A physical description
    • Mental health history
    • Character references
    • Your Social Security Number
