If you plead guilty to a traffic offense such as a speeding ticket, your insurance rates will probably go up. You will also lose points on your driving license. If you have three speeding tickets within an 18 month period, for example, your license can be revoked.

Out-of-State Traffic Ticket? Answer It Immediately!

A licensed New York State driver must respond to a ticket for a moving violation issued out-of-state or face the suspension of his license. Your license will be suspended until your answer the ticket or pay the fine. A ticket for a moving violation while driving in a state other than New York will never appear on your license if you promptly answer the ticket. The NYS Department of Motor Vehicles does not record out-of-state convictions committed by NY drivers who answer in the time set out on the ticket. The points — no matter how high they are — will not be added to your record of convictions.

There are exceptions to the above rule. If your “ticket” is for an alcohol or drug related violation then New York will ultimately be notified and you will pay the consequences, which will include the revocation of your driving privileges for at least 90 days depending upon your conviction. This includes Driving After Suspension/Revocation for a drunk driving offense (Aggravated Unlicensed Operation).

Out-of-State Drivers Ticketed in New York
Out-of-state drivers who fail to answer a ticket issued in New York State will have their license suspended in their home state until they answer the ticket in a New York Court.
